Dr. Devi Shetty was from the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, India. He is the son of restaurateur Bommaiya Shetty. He is the eighth child out of a total of nine children in his family. He said his inspiration behind this decision is a South African surgeon named Christiaan Barnand who was the first person to perform a heart transplant. Dr. Devi Shetty did his schooling at St. Aloysius School, Mangalore, and higher studies at St. Aloysious College, Mangaluru. In 1979, he finished his MBBS and did his post-graduate degree in General Surgery from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. He completed FRCS from Royal College of Surgeons, England. Career:
Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty come back to India in 1989 and worked at B.M. Birla Hospital in Kolkata. He was the first person to perform neonatal India’s first cardiac surgery in 1992. This surgery was performed on a baby named Ronnie who was 9 days old back then. Even, Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty operated on Mother Teresa when she had a heart attack and after that, he becomes her doctor. After spending some time in Kolkata, he returned to Bangalore. There, he started the Manipal Heart Foundation at Manipal Hospitals. Shetty’s father-in-law provided a huge financial contribution to the creation of this hospital.
Contribution through Society:
Shetty founded a multi-specialty hospital named Narayana Hrudayalaya in Bommasandra on the border side of Bangalore. Then he believed that the average medical cost can be reduced by fifty percent in the upcoming 9-10 years. This can happen only if the hospitals accept the design of economies of scale. Apart from Cardiac Surgery, Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospital also includes neurosurgery, pediatric surgery, transplant services, hematology, neurosurgery, nephrology and so more.
It is the largest heart hospital in the world with 1000 beds conducting more than 30 major surgeries in a day. The health city was built on the land which was a marshland before and reclaimed for this reason. The health city aims to give care to more than 15,000 outpatients/day. In 2012, Mr. Shetty made an agreement with TriMedx which is a subsidiary of Ascension Health. He took this step in 2012 for generating a joint venture for hospital chains in India.
Previously, the past Narayana Hrudayalaya also collaborated with Ascension Health for creating a health care city in the Cayman Islands, which can include 2,000 beds. In addition, RTIICS (Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences) is also founded by him.
He also signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the government of Karnataka for building a hospital with 5000+ beds near Bangalore International Airport. The company of Dr. Devi Shetty also signed MOU with the Gujarat Government for setting up a hospital with a 5000+ bed facility in Ahmedabad. Even, Dr. Devi Shetty is now a part of the Board of Governors that put back the MCI and also served for 1 year before additional reconstitution.

He did this with a microchip camera. He was the first to introduce Artificial Heart 1st time in India. He used the stomach’s blood vessels to bypass the blocked heart arteries. He was the first to introduce, perform Dynamic Cardiomyoplasty Operation. Even, his rate of successful surgery has been greater with children.
